Since the turn of the millennium, figurative painting has been making a comeback worldwide. For a long time she was marginalized as a depiction of reality by the sensuous means of color, by the power of imagination and the pleasure of observing the reality surrounding us: by abstract expressionism after 1945, then by a multitude of new postmodernist currents of the 1960s and 1970s. Minimal and concept art, performance, video and installation art further pushed the reduction of artistic means and depersonalization of art. Artists, curators and critics proclaimed the “death of painting”.

Figurative images, portraits of acquaintances and relatives, such as the self-portrait, form the focal point of this TVD ART show, which combines experienced reality with decorative dream-like productions. Delicacy and sophistication, the joy of the smallest detail are faced with trivial reality, sovereign mixed models of the Old Masters as the classical modern, to play an ironic game, uses photographic templates, but then again alienate them: the traditional self-portrait returns The Latvian painter Elena Tarasenko literally turned her back to her, with her head turned away from the viewer, her hairstyle with fashionably painted fingernails, this in the close-up.
