Isabelle Borges is an artist who stands out with a sovereign diversity as freedom in her artistic expression.
Already the exhibition title “SHIFTS” conveys something of the feeling of the enchanting lightness with which Isabelle Borges sets her minimalist as well as architectural gestures and thus permeates her entire new series of works. This consists of paintings, collages, and objects, as well as a room-sized multidimensional wall piece for the gallery’s light-filled spaces.

Characteristic of Isabelle Borges are her rhythmically balanced compositions. They are formed from the tectonic lines in contrasting interplay with the reflective as well as matte surfaces, from lights and shadows, from neon-luminous as well as pastel colors reflecting on the wall and the surrounding space, and from the correspondence between partially worked as well as raw materialities. These supposedly geometric forms are based on the strategy of repeated foldings, reflections, and rotations of the internal forms, so-called “moving surfaces” (I.B.), which in turn provide the framework for a condensed new pictorial space. In this way, Borges opens a “window” for the recipient’s optical as well as physical experience with her works.

Related to her image genesis is Isabelle Borges’ great fascination with “Mathematical Origami” as currently researched by Dr.Erik Demaine at MIT Massachusetts. Algorithms are used to develop computer-based geometries for folding problems in order to produce complex three-dimensional objects from a flat piece of paper according to an old Japanese art form. Borges’ collages in the “Circle” series experiment in a free-artistic way with Demaines’ proof of the “fold-and-cut problem.”
In the mental retreat of her studio or during her walks, the artist also finds herself communing with her role models such as the female protagonists of the Brazilian and European avant-garde. Lygia Pape, Lygia Clark or Helio Oiticica – representatives of a radical neo-concrete movement of South America in the 1950s-60s – share her mentality of eliciting a surprisingly poetic impression from the everyday with only minimal interventions. Equally important for Isabelle Borges are the progressive so-called “Bauhaus women” who founded their “own female modernism” (Ulrike Müller) and, like Gunta Stölzl among others, provide the keywords that also drive Isabelle Borges in her artistic work: Authenticity, naturalness, simplicity, wholeness.
Isabelle Borges (born in 1966 in Salvador, Brazil, lives and works in Berlin) began her liberal arts studies at the art academies in Rio de Janeiro and Düsseldorf after completing her studies in social sciences in Brasilia. She has had several solo exhibitions in Europe and Brazil, including at the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture MUBE, São Paulo (2013) and the Museum of the Republic, Rio de Janeiro (2000). As part of the 14th International Curitiba Biennial, she recently occupied a large room at the Museum Oscar Niemeyer, Curitiba (2019/2020). Her works are represented in institutional and private collections in Brazil and Europe.
