until 23.12. | #40103ARTatBerlin | Galerie Thomas Schulte shows from currently the exhibition „Naturphilosophie“ by the artist David Hartt.

Galerie Thomas Schulte presents Naturphilosophie, an exhibition of new works by David Hartt. For his second solo exhibition at the gallery, Hartt expands on an ongoing body of work, continuing his engagement with themes related to dominant systems of knowledge and representation, and corresponding processes of marginalization and displacement. Photogravure works and large tapestries, all sharing the title The Garden, comprise images of plants taken at various sites in northern Europe – in the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany. Bringing these peripheral, non-human agents into focus, the images reflect on how our environment, and the life present in it, has been shaped by human activity and ideals of the past – as well as their resonances today.

David Hartt, born in 1967 in Montréal, Canada, creates work that unpacks the social, cultural, and economic complexities of his varioussubjects. For Hartt, “place” is a way to investigate community, narrative, ideologies, and the intersection of private and public life. His photographs, videos, sculptures, and installations offer a sensitive and concise portrait of contemporary post-industrial, post-communist, and late-capitalist societies. The artist studied at The University of Ottawa and The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. His work is in the public collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Studio Museum in Harlem, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Henry Art Gallery, The National Gallery of Canada, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. He now lives and works in Philadelphia.
