until 22.02. | #4553ARTatBerlin | ChertLüdde (Potsdamer Str.) shows from 11. January 2025 the exhibitions „In the end something begins with us“ by the artist Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt and „Controlling Chaos“ by the artist Vincent Trasov.

ChertLüdde presents a dialogue between Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt (1932, Wurzen – 2024, Berlin, Germany) and Vincent Trasov (1947, Edmonton, Canada). These exhibitions celebrate the dynamic and avant-garde spirit of Berlin, even during the geopolitical division of the city.

Both artists were closely connected to their respective artistic communities and contributed to a vibrant network of collaboration and innovation. Together, their exhibitions tell the story of Berlin as a centre of artistic experimentation and international exchange, linked by the Mail Art movement. Among the like-minded is Anna Banana (1940-2024, Victoria, Canada), whose mail art correspondence is also shown as a bridge between the two exhibitions. The responses to the gallery’s Mail Art Open Call, inspired by Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt’s Divided Planet (1970), will also be on display in the gallery’s bookshop for the duration of the exhibitions.

ChertLüdde presents In the end something begins with us, an exhibition of paintings from the early creative phase of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt (1932-2024, Germany). The exhibition spans an arc from the 1960s to 1990 and traces her development from still lifes and abstract works to concrete poetry with the typewriter, which characterises her legacy as an East German artist. Using paintings, preparatory drawings, collages and personal writings, the exhibition offers archival access to Wolf-Rehfeldt’s creative processes that has rarely or never been seen before. The third exhibition at the gallery honours her legacy as a pioneering artist with a unique and methodical vision.

Controlling Chaos is a solo exhibition at ChertLüdde with historical works by the Canadian artist Vincent Trasov (1947, Canada) from the 1980s and 1990s. The exhibition shows two series: Fire Process Paintings, in which Trasov burned snow-covered canvases to unite creation and destruction and create bold geometric forms, and Heat Treated Paper, which explores impermanence and linguistic nuance. These works were created during Trasov’s DAAD residency in Berlin in the 1980s and reflect the avant-garde spirit of the city. Trasov continues to live and work between Germany and Canada.

Vernissage: Saturday, 11 January 2025, 6-9 pm
