until 09.08. | #0127ARTatBerlin | KÖNIG GALERIE is pleased to present a work by Andreas Fischer in the Chapel of the former St. Agnes Church from 11th July to 9th August 2015.
Andreas Fischer is best known for the machines he constructs out of discarded everyday things and off-the-shelf technical components. His art repurposes found objects as readymade elements and brings them to life with electric motors or hydraulics. His baffling contraptions often display human traits. Some dance, jump, or sing, while others lament, curse, and insistently argue: mechanical automata, they nonetheless act in ways that evince a narrative and
poetic quality.
Hut in the Mud, Andreas Fischer’s second exhibition at KÖNIG GALERIE, presents a work of the same title created in 2014; it was previously on display at the Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, and the Leopold-HoeschMuseum, Düren. The former builder’s hut is equipped with apparatuses. A central element in the piece is an exchange between Dan Sparks and U. S.
Senator Carl Levin that took place in 2010. During the financial crisis, Sparks, the former head of Goldman Sachs’s mortgage department, was grilled in a fifteen-hour meeting of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on
Investigations. Excerpts from the interrogation can be both heard and experienced in visual form in the hut: like the dancers on a music box, the machinery stages the exchange of questions and answers as a choreography synchronized with the text to highlight the physical and psychological compulsions that act as flashpoints of social as well as personal conflict.
Andreas Fischer (*1972) lives and works in Düsseldorf where he did his masters as a student of Georg Herold at the Kunstakademie in 2003. Since then he had solo exhibitions at Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren (2014) Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2012); Galerie Vera Gliem, Cologne (2011); Kunstverein Bonn (2009) and Art Cologne (2007). His works have been presented at group exhibitions at Kölnischer Kunstverein (2014), Kunstverein Hamburg (2013); Martha Herford,
Germany (2012); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2010); Kunst im Tunnel (KIT), Düsseldorf (2007) and Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria (2005). Fischer received grants and fellowships by the Kunststiftung NRW, the Kunstfond Bonn, the Peill-Stiftung Düren and a residency at Schloss Ringenberg. His works are part of institutional collections such as “Kunst aus NRW”, Kornelimünster, Aachen and Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
