Galerie Barbara Thumm presents the solo exhibition T.S.K.F.P.R.M. by conceptual artist Anna Oppermann (1940-1993) with works from her estate. The extensive selection of individual painterly works runs through Oppermann’s oeuvre and draws attention to the association of motifs as one of her central artistic principles. Frequently, individual objects or perspectives formed recurring points of departure and reference for association around a theme and were assigned their own iconic meaning within the complex system of references of the work as a whole. Across different media, the formal correspondences provide an insight into the extent of the graphic and sculptural quality of Oppermann’s practice. His close observation of his own perception and its conditions becomes clear through the focus on individual motivic elements. In addition to variable forms of representation, different states and manifestations of individual motifs can be discerned in loops, modifications, condensations, divisions and multiplications, which are also central to Oppermann’s overall method of constantly reconfiguring arrangements. In addition, the title of the exhibition picks up on another special feature of Oppermann’s, namely his free play with the assignment of linguistic meanings, phonetic similarities or even riddles through the abbreviation of words. Through the tension between the repetition of the image and the simultaneous deviation from the representation, the exhibition invites the viewer to make his or her own references and to decipher the meaning hidden behind the initials.
