until 31.05. | #1962ARTatBerlin | Gallery ART CRU shows from 20th April 2018 the exhibition by the artist Normann Seibold.

Normann Seibolds (born 1968, Stuttgart) Powerful oil paintings are like a force of nature. With his bare hands, he sets the color layer over the color layer to create his large-format works. They show recurring leitmotifs such as “Woman with a Flower” and “Wild Accident” or explore the complexity of the medium of oil paint in several-pound abstract works with relief-like structures that look overwhelming.

The works of Seibold are characterized by a spontaneous, expressive way of painting. His motives are initially often naked women, later the painting is flattened and his imagery is supplemented by monsters with huge heads. From 1994 he switched from working with acrylic to a paste-like technique in oil on canvas in formats up to 200 cm. In the following years he produces more and more pictures, which ia. reminiscent of Georg Baselitz or the painting of the Neue Wilden. As alcohol consumption increases, his work becomes more intoxicating and the motives more complex. In series, he works on topics such as a fox run over by a car or various campfire scenes. Cultural historical personalities such as Wagner, Nietzsche and Ludwig II are portrayed, and individual images with grotesque figures emerge. The color masses used become denser and increasingly dominate the creation of Seibolds. “The images now often determine a highly differentiated relief of color matter, which is applied with a brush, spatula, fingers or directly from the tube and processed in the wet state: by painting, trowelling, kneading, scratches” (Thomas Röske). As of 2000, the pictures become increasingly abstract, the materiality of the oil paints moves into the center, figurative elements appear only sporadically.

In 1995, Normann Seibold received a scholarship from the Prof. Carl Fischer Foundation. From 1990 Seibold studied at the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences Graphic Design. One year later he moved to the University of Art Therapy in Nürtingen. From 1993 Seibold studied at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Max Kaminski and graduated in 1999. At the end of his studies, the artist manifested a mental illness. After several stays in a clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy, Mr. Seibold went to the Samariterstift Grafeneck, a social-psychiatric institution in Baden-Württemberg, at the end of 2001. There, the foundation provides him with studio and storage rooms in the castle building. The complete work includes more than 2500 works so far.
