until 19.06. | #3055ARTatBerlin | ALEXANDER OCHS PRIVATE shows since 14th May 2021 in the second part of the exhibition series ‘Bei uns. Bei Euch! Ein künstlerisches Kontinuum Chemnitz/Berlin’ (> At us. At yours! An artistic continuum Chemnitz/Berlin) works by the artists Carlfriedrich Claus, Gregor Torsten Kozik, Jan Kummer, Nina Kummer, Via Lewandowsky, Michael Morgner, Osmar Osten, Thomas Ranft and Steffen Vollmer.
It may be due to mining in the Ore Mountains, which was first mentioned in a document called ‘Freiberg Mining’ in 1185, more than 800 years ago. Work underground means joint work, collectivity without egalitarianism, being dependent on each other, solidarity and creative community: carving, making music and singing in the evening.
Thus the history, also of contemporary art, is a history of associative structures between artists from Chemnitz, Karl-Marx-Stadt, and the neighboring mining regions. Still in GDR times in 1977 the group Clara Mosch was founded, consisting of Michael Morgner, Thomas Ranft, Carlfriedrich Claus, Gregor-Torsten Schade and Dagmar Ranft-Schinkel. Already four years before, the Galerie Oben establishes itself, and with it its Wednesday Talks, to which actors and writers such as Eva Strittmatter, Erich Arendt, Uschi Brüning or even Ulrich Mühe are invited. Clara Mosch’s artists also find a place in the gallery, which has been continued in the meantime by Gunar Barthel.

In 1986, the artists’ collective AG Geige was founded as a band; ‘AG’ means working group, here an ironic exaggeration of the cultural-artistic participation of the ‘masses’ in culture demanded in the GDR. The band disbanded after the fall of the Wall, in 1993, and band member Jan Kummer became a successful visual artist.
Only a few years later, Jan Kummer’s daughters Nina and Lotta Kummer revived the tradition of the artists’ collective, the interdisciplinary ‘Bikini Kommando’ was founded in 2020.
