“What is a space? A space is everything.
A room full of dirty clothes left on the floor by anonymous guests.
A site for community. A sense of belonging.
A place most deeply formed by love — though with no need for romanticism.
Seeking that rough tenderness behind the ravages of existence.
And what of claiming spaces? How psychotic is private property?
Like a place, time too can become palpable,
specific places that existed,
moments of resistance,
a time that lasts the duration of a struggle.
‘Psychotic Property, Neurotic garden’ is a double exhibition by Claude Eigan and Jake Kent, curated by Marta Santi at Klemm’s Showroom.
The show exists as a sequel to ‘CJ’s Place’ — a show produced at Gr_und in Berlin in 2021, representing a first meeting point or potential site of community.
In embracing the transient, communities find strength and adaptability. Redefining their concept of spaces and leaving indelible marks on the collective memoir of our cultural landscapes.
‘Psychotic Property, Neurotic Garden’ is both an homage to pre-existing and existing subcultural and/or queer spaces, and a reflection on the soft-spots and rupture lines of the communal. Not without a sense of hope in our ability to adapt and create, and putting trust in the potential of resistance.
All we have is the dirt and leftovers. We make them ours for a time, and then…”
