until 06.11. | #3123ARTatBerlin | KVOST presents from 16th September 2021 the exhibition Świetlica by the artist Cristina Ferreira-Szwarc, winner of the KVOST Scholarship 2020.
The Świetlica is a special place, an unusual hybrid, as it can be a shimmering childhood memory, a waiting room or an escape from boredom. According to dictionaries, it is a kind of communal lounge where members of a community meet for group activities. For Cristina Ferreira-Szwarc, the Świetlica is a space to talk about emigration, heritage and belonging.
The artist’s exhibition at KVOST is the result of an interview-based research process with members of the Polish community in Berlin. The voices from these interviews meet, collide, dance to a timeless melody. Meanwhile, they remain caught between individual narrative and historical narrative, memory and fiction.
The Świetlica envisages itself in the exhibition space, in the echo of these voices between the walls and asks: What is a community and where is its meeting point? What was yesterday, what is today and what will be tomorrow? Where do we go from here, with whom?

The artist Cristina Ferreira-Szwarc is the winner of the KVOST scholarship 2020.
The jury consisted of the artists Asta Gröting and Agnieszka Polska, the curatorial team Nathalie Hoyos & Rainald Schumacher, who specialise in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, and the founding board members of Kunstverein Ost, Julia Rust and Stephan Koal.
With their selection, the jury acknowledged the European, integrative orientation and communal perspective of their project Świetlica (Community Space). Ferreira-Szwarc, who has lived in Poland since 2013, turns her gaze back to the everyday life of Polish immigrants living in Berlin.
The artist-in-residence programme in Berlin was discontinued in 2020 and the project was supported financially and organisationally by KVOST for a period of one year. The results of the scholarship will be presented at Berlin Art Week 2021.
KVOST – der Kunstverein Ost supports artists who come from Eastern Europe or whose lives and working methods have been shaped by the experience of the former Eastern Bloc. The KVOST scholarship was offered for the first time in 2019.
