until 30.07. | #3412ARTatBerlin | Galerie Barbara Thumm presents from 30. April 2022 (Opening on 29.04) the exhibition “Silhouettes Critiques” by the artist El Hadji Sy.
El Hadji Sy lives and works in Dakar. He is a painter, performer, curator and activist who has been a leading figure in Senegalese art since the 1970s. He belongs to the second generation of Senegalese artists who came after the renowned École de Dakar. Defying the cultural regime of Léopold Sédar Senghor, Sy painted with his feet for 10 years, refusing to fit into the canon of art history. Since the mid-1980s, he has used jute rice bags as a painting surface, on which he paints with various media such as oil, acrylic, tar and wax. The paintings are hung from the ceiling, placed on the floor and also painted on the wall. Sometimes he also makes stand-alone paintings on frames. With a swirling script of signs and figures, Sy’s visual language reflects a distinctly performative style.
