until 28.07. |#3083ARTatBerlin | Galerie Dittmar presents since 19th June 2021 the solo exhibition Farbe und Struktur (Colour and Structure) with paper works from 2008 to 2020 by the artist Nora Schattauer.
Nora Schattauer deals with questions of form and pictorial processes that transcend conventional genre boundaries. Drawing and painting, line and colour are suspended in them, but not in the conventional manner of a creative element, but rather the result of mediated, newly tested procedures.
The artist works with chemical solutions and mineral salts, which are applied to the paper in a controlled manner, in such a way that an almost regular, constantly varied pattern forms the basic framework. The substances react with the paper, form compounds and are subject to subsequent colour changes. The result is not entirely controllable, but empirical values allow for possibilities of control, whereby the unexpected retains its constitutive function. Structured composition and colourful appearance are indissolubly interwoven, the microscopic variety of forms evokes associations with nature, the pulsation memories of processual procedures.

The paintings are stripped of any schematism of grid-like work. Everything seems to be set into slight oscillations, whether it is a matter of closed or more open structures and internal forms, regardless of which line progressions and net formations are present or in which way the colour oscillates. There is a fluctuation and vibration in the surface, an oscillation in the depth, the interplay of line and colour and a play of the inversion of pattern and ground.

Nora Schattauer, born in Duisburg in 1952, lives and works in Cologne. Exhibitions and participations, among others, at the Neues Museum Weserburg, Bremen, the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Kunstbibliothek Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the Museum Ostwall, Dortmund. The exhibition is accompanied by a 96-page catalogue with 61 illustrations and a contribution by Bernhard Maaz, Director General of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen.
